VETERANS (Dick Wilson, CHAIR) June 2023 435-773-6974
VETERANS CORNER
June 2023
The following is a report of the accomplishments of your Veterans Committee. To date this year, we have
assembled sanitary packs for the homeless that we see in St George, and members are free to hand them out to the
needy. We are meeting with Veteran students at Utah Tech University to help those who need assistance and in
fact we have given financial assistance for utility bills, rent, as well as food and gas gift cards. We have
networked with other Veteran groups to aid the Veterans in St George.
Retirement homes that we have connected with invite us in for conversation, corn hole and arts and crafts.
There are currently five (5) Veteran Committee volunteers who have gone through the qualifying process at
the Southern Utah Veterans Home , and they are at the Home on a weekly basis. We help with the bingo program,
deliver mail, visit, write letters for the veterans, donate and serve birthday cake each month and help with
excursions. We have assisted with trips to the Veyo Pie store, breakfast at Bishops, lunch at the Golden Corral,
trips to Walmart for shopping and lately a trip to the Air Museum at the airport. What do we do? We help our vets
who are in manual wheelchairs, we become their arms for reaching, serve their plates in the buffet lines, act as
eyes and ears for those who are failing and above all, we listen to their stories.
This month we will finish planting the pots on the patios of the Veterans Home and purchase bird seed, some
new bird feeders, and more candy prizes for bingo.
In the fall we will hold our annual November luncheon for all Veterans and of course we will be continuing
the Veteran Christmas Tree project.
And as always, we are available to assist you with any information on veteran matters that you may need. If we
don’t have the answer, we’ll get it.
This committee is a busy one and we are fortunate to have many interested members. Would you like to join
us? Our meetings are on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and all are welcome.
Remember to reach out to our Veterans with care and honor.
